You Can Walk From New York to South Africa 🚶‍♂️

Did you know you could technically walk from New York to South Africa? Sounds crazy with the Atlantic in the way—but it’s possible. You’d start in New York City, crossing Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Washington. From there, you’d enter Canada, and after more than 2,000 miles, you’d step into Alaska—the biggest U.S. state.

Then it’s on to the Bering Strait, where you’d have to wait for winter until the water freezes into a literal ice bridge. Cross it, and you’re in Russia. From there, it’s an endless trek across Siberia until you reach Georgia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and finally, South Africa.

This journey would take over 14,000 miles, 500 days, and a few million dollars. And planning it isn’t simple—you can’t just stroll across borders. You’d need visas for more than 15 countries, while surviving both the freezing Russian tundra and the scorching African Sahara.

And the risks? Deadly snakes in Zimbabwe, rampant malaria in Uganda, armed conflict in South Sudan, and even a civil war in Syria. And that’s just scratching the surface.
